One of the reasons that I adore Khao San Road in Bangkok is that you can meet such an array of people in such a short period of time. This is a travellers ghetto where people who are coming for a short break, mingle with travellers who have been on the road for a year or two (or five).
If you are really broke, this is a great place to hook up with somebody who will gladly trade stories for an excellent free meal. Last time I was in Khao San Road, I was just returning from a very strenuous journey to see Angkor Wat in Cambodia. I met this great guy looking at Hua Hin Property and he invited me to join him on a journey to this great beach resort. It wasn’t the kind of place that I would normally go, but a free holiday is a free holiday. It was a lot cooler than I thought it would be. I imagined a Phuket nightmare with high rise developments and jet skis.
It’s an old resort, developed over seventy years ago as a getaway for King Rama VII and adopted by Thai nobility and aristocracy. A bit out of my league, but my new mate treated me to a brilliant dinner of local seafood at a restaurant built on stilts, a superb party with some Mekong whiskey, a great night at the house he was thinking of buying, and a return ticket to Bangkok on the train. Not too shabby for yabby!
